When LG G7 and V35 ThinQ will get Android Pie ?

Previously, we expected that LG would release the update sooner because of Project Treble of Oreo. But the South Korean tech giant took so much time to develop Pie update for G7 flagship and rolled out the Beta version on November 21st in its home country only. The registered G7 ThinQ users in South Korea received Beta 2 with some improvements, later in December 2018. Finally, LG announced in Korean its official blog that they will kick off the Global rollout of stable update of Pie for G7 ThinQ from January 1st, 2019. As usual, the rollout may begin in South Korea in the first week of January and spread to other Asian countries in Second and third weeks of January.

The unlocked G7 ThinQ users in the US and UK may receive the update notification in mid or late-January. Carrier locked G7 ThinQ devices might receive the update from February onwards and rollout dates depend upon carrier and region.

The flagships V40 ThinQ and V35 ThinQ stand next G7 to receice the Pie update. Since, even the Beta testing hasn’t begun for V40 and V35 flagships atleast in South Korea, we expect LG to rollout the Pie update for V35 ThinQ in Q2 of 2019. The confirmed rollout dates of Android Pie for V35 ThinQ will be posted here, as soon as LG announced them.

Android Pie Exclusive Features

Android Pie arrived with many notable features like Gesture based Interface, Screenshot Editor, New Messaging style, Revamped Message notifications, App actions, Digital wellbeing, Adaptive battery and many more.

1. Gesture based Interface

Android pie navbar lg v35 thinq

The Gesture based Interface is one of the new features coming with the Android Pie update to LG G7 and V35 devices to revamp the user experience totally. In Android P, there is no app previews button in navigation bar and the shapes of other buttons are also changed. The Back button changed from a Triangle to a Chevron while the Home button takes a pill shape.

To view Recent Apps, user just swipe up on the Home button, then app previews will appear. G7 and V35 users can swipe horizontally to open the required app and this makes multi-tasking really simple. User can also swipe right or left on the Home button to switch between apps quickly.

A Keyboard toggle icon also appear on the Navbar while typing at where the Recent apps button was present. So users can toggle between different keyboards while typing easily.

2. Adaptive Battery

Android p adaptive battery lg g7 thinq

Adaptive Battery is a remarkable feature to improve battery life coming with the Android P. In the predecessor of Android 9.0, Google brought background app restrictions to reduce battery drain. Now with the Adaptive Battery feature, battery life will be improved upto 30%, according to Dave Burke, VP of Android Engineering.

Adaptive Battery uses on-device machine learning to perceive the user’s app usage habits and adjust the device accordingly. The feature determine which apps and services, user is going to use in the next few hours and devotes resources only to them and reduces resources to sparingly used apps. So CPU wake cycles are reduced upto 30 percent, so 30 percent more battery will be available.

3. Screenshot Markup Editor

With the Android P update, a native Screenshot Editor feature is coming to G7 ThinQ and V35 ThinQ users. After taking the screenshot, a heads-up notification with the Edit option will appear, tapping on the Edit, later on Markup Editor, user can open it.

In the Mark up Editor, user can add details and highlight details by using the Pen and Highlighter tools in seven colors. There are also Undo and Redo options in the Markup Editor along with Pen and Highlighter options. Users can also crop screenshots in the Editor by dragging over the edges.

4. Revamped Messaging Style

Android p messages lg v35 thinq

Google refined Notifications very much in the previous Nougat and Oreo updates and now Android P came with more improvements. App developers can use Android P Messaging Style to display inline images, stickers and even suggest smart replies.

Using the smart replies feature, users can give quick reply directly from Notifications. More details about the feature are yet to be revealed.

5. Improvements to Do Not Disturb

android pie shush feature lg v35 g7

Google rolled out the Shush feature with the Android Pie update enhance Do Not Disturb facility in Android OS. With this feature, when the user keeps his G7 or V35 flagship face down on the table, the Shush feature activated automatically and mute all calls, notification beeps, pings and events. Only whitelisted contacts can get through it in case of emargencies.

So user can reduce the time spent on the device by using Shush and Digital well being features. It seems that, with these features, Google is taking steps to reduce smart phone addiction and promote healthy usage.

6. Digital wellbeing

digital wellbeing lg v35

The Digital wellbeing feature is still in beta stage, available only for Google Pixel and Pixel 2 users and didn’t come along with the Android 9 Pie official build. However, the Search giant announced that the feature will be finalized soon and rollout begins in this fall. So LG may include this feature in its Pie update for G7 ThinQ and V35 flagships.

Digital wellbeing is comprised mainly of three features which are Dashboard, Winddown and App timer. Using the dashboard, the user can check how many times the device has been unlocked, how much time spent on each app and so on. The App timer helps to restrict the time spent on individual apps and reduce addiction to games, social media etc. Wind down is another notable feature to reduce eye strain, it changes the display to gray scale automatically if the user is using phone at night time.

7. Improved Volume Controls

The Search Giant has improved volume sliders and their buttons in the Android Pie update. When user taps volumer rocker physical buttons on V35 or G7 the volume slider will appear vertically on the right side of the screen instead of top. On pressing the buttons, only media volume can be increased unlike Ring volume in earlier Android versions.

Users can tap on the Note icon below the vertical slider to mute or unmute. To enter the Sound Section in Settings, users tap on the Gear icon below the note icon. The new volume controls also remember the Bluetooth volume differently than other volumes, so that ear buds won’t play at full volume and only play at the previously remember level.

8. App Slices

Android pie app slices

The App slices is one of the new features in the Android Pie update which are very much useful for both app developers and also users. Using the feature, developers can make their apps to look more initiative and provide good user experience. According to the preview shown by Google at I/O 2018 event, when the user type in Google search bar as Lyft, along with the app itself, ride details like fare and time to various places will also appear.

Google released the first Beta of Android Q on 13th, March with many improvements to privacy options and Desktop mode. One of the remarkable improvement is location and file sharing permissions specific for apps. Some rumours and the commits in the development site indicate the Android Q Beta for more devices this year. Last time, Android P Beta arrived for Sony, Essential, Nokia, Vivo, Oneplus, Oppo flagships other than the Pixel lineup. This time, other tech giants like LG may also participate in Android Beta program. So the flagship devices like G7 ThinQ and G8 might get the update in the part of the Beta program soon. Update on 13/8/2018 :

Google released the Android 9 final edition with the codename of Pie which really awesome and sweet, on August 6th. The Android Pie update doesn’t contain App Slices and Digital well being features. The Search giant announced that they will come to Pixel devices before the end of this fall.

HTC and Sony announced which of thier flagships are going to receive the update soon. But LG didn’t announce any thing about the Android Pie rollout for its flagships.

On November 21st, LG began the registration for Pie Beta and started the beta rollout for G7 users in South Korea. The beta is available to download via the Quick Help app. A few hours ago, the tech giant rolls out the second beta for G7 ThinQ devices. A G7 ThinQ user from South Korea uploaded a video showing the G7 running on Pie beta 2.

But now it seems that LG is going to to test the Beta build longer than anticipated. So, more likely the global rollout of Pie for G7 will begin in Q1 of 2019. The official rollout dates will be revealed in coming days.

Update on 17/1/2019 :

According to LG’s post in Korean, the tech giant set to rollout the Pie update for G7 ThinQ from January 1st. However, we haven’t received any tips from users that they have got Pie. So it seems that LG is pushing out the update for select users in its home country, South Korea only. As officials indicated earlier, the South Korean tech giant should start the global rollout of Pie with G7 ThinQ in Q1 of 2019.

Carrier locked G7 owners in the US and UK may have to wait more time to taste a slice of Pie. There is no word officially regarding the rollout for V35 ThinQ, but most likely the Pie rollout will disseminate to V35 shortly after G7. Mean while, rumours claim that LG is going to launch the successor of G7 under the name of G8 ThinQ at MWC 2019 in late-February with preloaded Android Pie.

We will update this post soon with more details about the Android Pie update for G7 ThinQ and V35 ThinQ.

No Android Pie update for Moto Z2 Force on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint

No Android Pie update for Moto Z2 Force on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint

The Moto Z2 Force users on Verizon recently got updated to Android Pie which brings 5G support through Moto mod. The other carriers are also expected to rollout the update very soon.

However, according to a Motorola spokesperson, the company decided to cancel the Android Pie update for Z2 Force on other carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. Motorola didin’t stated the reasons clearly but we expect the reason would be carrier’s update certification cost.

Verizon needs 5G support for Z2 force and Pie is needed for 5G mod support. So the carrier managed to release the Pie update to get 5G network support for the flagship.

However, Motorola told that the flagship will receive the security updates upto two years. As the Z2 Force flagship was released in summer of 2017, the two year period will end soon. So security updates support for Z2 Force will also end in a few months.

As it is very clear that Moto Z2 Force is not getting Pie on carriers other than Verizon, we advice the users to install Android Pie custom rom or upgrade to other latest flagships.

Recently, HTC has confirmed that they will rollout Android Pie update for HTC U11 and U11 Plus flagships, but no timeline has announced. The development of Android Pie for HTC U11 and U11 Plus has begun already and the Taiwanese tech Giant usually takes 90 to 100 days release the update for its flagships after the official release by Google.

As HTC U11+ arrived with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and also enabled Project Treble, the flagship is expected to get the update along with HTC U12+ flagship. Users of HTC U11 and U11 Plus and tech analysts expected that the rollout would take place in Q4 of 2018, but the rollout didin’t happen. HTC begins its Pie rollout with U11 Life devices on November 30th, 2018. However, there is still no word about the rollout for flagship devices. According to Nashwillechatterclass, who first spotted HTC U11 running on Pie on Geekbench, the rollout is very near. So it seems that the Pie rollout for HTC U11 and U11 Plus devices will begin in January 2019 at least for unlocked devices. Carrier locked devices may begin rollout in February or March 2019.

Update on 27/5/2019 :

Android-pie-htc-u11-update

The Taiwanese tech giant, at last, kicks off the rollout of Android 9 Pie for U11 units in its home country. The U11 users in Taiwan currently receiving the notifications of the Pie update with the size of about 1.36GB. The update also includes some system enhancements which are yet to be known and removes Google+ from blink feed since Google shut down the Google+ platform last month.

Most likely, the update will hit the US and European regions in the next month and spread to Australia in July. We will post any news regarding the update here. Share your thoughts on the rollout of Pie for U11 in the comments below.

What’s New in the Android 9 Pie update ?

The Android P first preview comes with many improvements to the Neural Network API which was debuted with Android 8.1 Oreo. The Neural Network API 1.1 of Android Pie come with more Neural networks support and facilitate faster on-device Machine Learning.

New Power Menu with Screenshot Button

In Android 9 Pie, Google totally revamped the Power Menu with the addition of Screenshot button and Emergency buttons. Using the Screenshot button, HTC U11 users can take screenshots quickly with only single tap. So taking screenshots becomes much easier with the Pie update.

android-pie-screenshot-button

Power menu got new design and appears in light and Dark themes, according to system theme and Wallpaper. Google shifted its place from centre to the side of screen, so that users can reach for it with single hand easily. Using the Emergency button, users can dial to the emergency number with single tap only.

Shutting Down and Restarting screens are also arrived with the Pie update. After the user taps on the Shut down button in Power menu, screen goes black with Shutting down text on centre, while Restarting screen shows Green color overley with Restarting text on the centre. However, we are not sure these refinements make thier way for U11, as HTC uses custom sense UI.

After taking the screenshot, the appeared heads-up Notification shows the Edit button which directly land users into the editing screen of Google Photos. Through the Markup screenshot editor, HTC U11 users can make basic refinements to the screenshots.

android p pip

As expected earlier, the Android Pie update brings some radical improvements to Picture in Picture mode arrived with Oreo. A Settings Gear icons appears on the PiP window, through which users can disable or enable the app’s PiP mode. So any supported app like is playing video through PiP window, user can disable PiP mode for that app through the Settings icon. Then, the app won’t play any videos in the PiP mode.

Android Pie Accessibility Menu

At Google I/O 2018, the Search Giant announced that there will be a revamped Accessibility menu in the Pie update to help motor disabled users. So with the help of the Menu, not only motor disabled users but also normal users can easily carry out Nine Actions, which would otherwise requires Gestures or hardware button presses.

Android pie htc u11 accessibility menu

To enable the Menu, HTC U11 users open the Settings app, go to Accessibility Section and enable Accessibility menu under interaction controls. Then, users can notice a small human shape button in the navbar, on tapping the icon, a menu with Nine actions which are Google Assistant, Accessibility Settings, Power, Volume Settings, Recent Apps, Lock screen, Quick settings, Notifications and Screenshot button. Google may refine the accessibility menu further in the upcoming updates.

Android Pie Split screen

Android pie split screen htc u11

The Search giant refined the multi tasking experience in Android Oreo with the introduction of Picture in Picture feature which helps users to multi-task in an efficient way.

In Android Pie, Google integrated the Split screen feature with new gesture navigation system and removed the option to enter split screen by long tapping Recent apps button. So to enter Split screen mode in Pie, users have to tap on the app icon in the recent apps screen and select the Split screen option in the menu. Finally, select the second app to share the screen to start Split screen. So it seems the Search Giant followed the split screen feature in Note 8 for Android Pie. In the upcoming updates, Google may refine the Split screen feature and make multitasking easier.

Shush Mode

android pie shush htc u11

This is an enhancement to Do not Disturb feature which improves user experience and also helps to reduce addiction to smartphones. When user puts the U11 or U11+ device face down, the Shush feature gets enabled and automatically activate the DND feature, so no message beeps or pings and notification sounds. Only the whitelisted contacts can get through it in case of any emergencies. The Shush feature may get further refined in the upcoming Android Q update.

App Actions

android pie app actions htc u11

The Android Pie update brings the App Actions feature which predicts user’s behaviour using on-device machine learning and show suggested actions to improve user experience a lot. For example, when the user plugs-in headphone into the jack of device, Android will show box containing suggested actions about the source of music. So user can play music from his favourite playlist in Spotify with a single tap only.

Such App actions appear throughout Android in many places like Google Assistant, Playstore, Maps and so on. The Search giant may refine this great feature further in upcoming updates.

Indoor Positioning Through Wi-Fi RTT

android p indoor position

In recent years, Google updated the Maps with many refinements regarding the outdoor directions turn by turn. Device manufacturers also made several improvements to improve accuracy of the position of the devices. Using the help from Wi-Fi Round Trip Time (RTT), Android developers brought the indoor position in Android P.

Indoor position works through the Wi-Fi 802.11mc networks, measuring how far the device from the Wi-Fi Access point. There is no clarification whether the feature works in earlier flagship Android phones or not. So even if the HTC U11 flagship couldn’t get the indoor positioning feature through Android 9.0 P update, the future HTC flagships may fully support it.

Simulate Display cutout

Android pie display cutout htc u11

HTC U11 and U11 Plus flagships don’t sport a notch unlike Pixel 3 XL. But with Android Pie, HTC U11 and U11 Plus users can simulate a display cutout for fun through developer options. Users can also select the size of the cutout in the Developer options.

To simulate a cutout, U11 users can open the Settings app, open Developer Options, tap on Simulate a Display with a cutout and select the notch width. Now many app developers are refining their apps to make them notch compatible, so users can try the cutout option to get a whole new experience.

Refined Google Assistant

Android 9.0 p google assistant

Google Assistant is one of the top digital assistants, however still Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are dominating the field while the Google Assistant is lagging behind, inspite of widespread availability. According to a Bloomberg’s report, in Android P, we may see much refined and fully integrated Google Assistant.

Google will open up the Assistant to Third-Party apps with the Android 9.0 P update, as Amazon done with Alexa. Previously, Apple did open the Siri to third-party apps in iOS 10. So in Android P, users may be able to use the Google Assistant to perform tasks in non-Google apps. More details about the Google Assistant in Android P will be revealed in coming days.

Gesture-based Navigation

android pie navigation htc u11

The Search Giant brought a totally revamped navigation with the Android Pie update which helps users navigate quickly using gestures. In Pie, there is no app previews button and Back button on the home screen, users have to swipe up on the home button and then swipe right or left on the button to switch between apps.

So multitasking will get much easier for HTC U11 users with the Pie update. The newly designed small pill shaped home and chevron shaped Back buttons are gorgeous. The back button appears only inside apps when necessary. The horizontal style app previews similar to that on iPhone X will appear on U11 and U11 Plus flagships after the Pie update. The interface may get enhanced further with HTC’s optimization with Sense skin.

Support for HEIF Image and HDR VP9 Video

Android P comes with the support for HEIF Image format and HDR VP9 Video format. HEIF or High Efficiency Image File Format is a new format developed by MPEG Group approximately two years back. It is designed to store about twice as much image data stored by JPEG keeping the file size almost similar. Latest iPhones support the new image format and now with the Android P update, HTC U11 and U11 Plus flagships will also support it.

A big boost for HTC U11+ users is the HDR VP9 profile support which helps in decoding the HDR content. In coming days, the apps to play HDR content will come, then more details about the new profile will be revealed.

Navigation Bar and Gesture-based Interface

After the debut of Material Design with Android 5.0 Lollipop in 2014, Google made no significant changes to the navigation bar until Android 8.1 Oreo. In Android 8.1, some minor improvements were made to the navigation bar to prevent screen burn in on devices with OLED screens.

Android p navbar htc u11

Now with Android 9.0, the Search giant has totally revamped the navigation bar and also multi tasking. The Navigation bar in Android P has got no App Preview button, so users use gestures to switch between apps. The Home button also got new style and shape of a pill and the Back button shape changed to a chevron. So when the user needs to view recent apps, just swipe up on the home button and a horizontal recent app previews will appear. To switch between apps, user also swipe right or left on home button. The Back button appears only when necessary inside apps. So the Android Pie update will give a whole new multi-tasking experience to HTC U11 users.

The Keyboard toggle button also appears in Navbar while typing where the recent apps button was present, so that user can easily switch between keyboards.

Four Notification Icons only in Statusbar

In order to make Android Pie notch compatible, the Search giant restricted the number of icons which appear as Notifications in status bar. In the Beta of Android 9.0, only four notification icons appear in both notched and un-notched phones. So it seems that HTC U11 users should adapt to this major visual change after updating to Android P.

If the phone receives more than four notifications, a string of dots will appear next to the four icons. Each dot represents another notification received, but it doesn’t show which app received the notification. So the user have to swipe down to check full notifications in the Android 9.0 update. The users were able to see upto seven icons in the earlier Android 8.0 Oreo, now Google cut it to four icons only.

Adaptive Battery

Android p adaptive battery htc u11

The Android 9.0 P update especially got enhanced with the features like Adaptive Battery with AI support. Using the Snapdragon 835 chipset, HTC U11 devices fully support on-device machine learning which is required for the Adaptive Battery feature. The feature predicts which apps, the user is going to use in the next few hours and later.

The VP of Android Engineering, Dave Burke said that the feature reduces the CPU wakeup calls and thereby battery drain upto 30%. The Adaptive Battery feature looks very promising, but yet to be tested fully.

Screenshot Editor

In March, the first preview of Android P came with Screenshot editor, which can be accessed with only single tap, after taking the screenshot. Now in Android P DP2, Google refined the feature and adds more functions. So after taking screenshot, user can choose Share, Edit or Delete options with single tap.

After tapping on the Edit button, select the Markup App to edit using the editor. In the Editor, user can highlight, annotate and also undo changes. The editor in DP2 works far smoother than that one in DP1. So in upcoming releases, more improvements may come to the Android P Markup Editor.

Lockdown Mode

android p lockdown htc u11

It is a new security feature coming with the Android Pie update for HTC U11 and U11 Plus flagships. To enable the lockdown feature, user just has to tap on the Enter Lockdown option in the Power Menu. After enabling Lockdown, the fingerprint unlock method won’t work and thereby boosts the security of the device.

To unlock in the lockdown mode, user has to use password, pattern or PIN for any other unlock methods to work again the device. The feature might be improved further in upcoming previews and final release.

New Autorotate button

Android pie autorotate

The autorotate button in Quick Settings toggle has got revamped and arrived with a new design. The Search Giant also changed the position of Autorotate button in navbar. The button appears in Navbar where the App Previews button was present. The button appears in Navbar inside apps when necessary, so that users can rotate the screen view easily without reaching for Quick Settings.

Update on 17/10/2018 :

It seems that Samsung is on the verge of rolling out the Pie Beta 1 for select Galaxy S9 and S9+ users in the US. The support pages FAQ and EULA have been shown up for Samsung Pie Beta program for US. There are only limited slots for the Pie Beta program, so interested users can register through Samsung+ app. Last year, only 10,000 spots were available for Oreo Beta program for S8 lineup.

However, the support pages haven’t shown up for UK and South Korea websites, but we expect they will also go live very soon. Recently, the early builds of Pie for S9 and Note 9 leaked out which gave us a glimpse at the Samsung Experience UI. But with the Beta 1 of Pie only, we could confirm which features Samsung is going to rollout for S9 and Note 9 devices.

Update on 6/12/2018 :

It’s been several weeks since Samsung began the One UI beta program for S9 flagship, now program spread to Note 9 too. The unlocked Note 9 users in the US are able to register for One UI beta program through new Samsung+ app. Only the variant N960U1 users are eligible for beta program at the moment. It is still unknown whether the program extended to Note 8 or not.

Previously, Samsung started the One UI beta program with South Korea and later extended to USA and Germany. The size of the Beta update is about 1.6 GB and takes a couple of minutes to download and install. According to the installed users, Pie One UI gives a whole new experience and also speed up device.

Update on 1/1/2019 :

Previously, Samsung officially announced the stable Pie rollout for Galaxy S9 will begin from January 15th and the rollout of Beta 4 has begun in the US. However, folks at Sammobile discovered a weird battery drain issue in the last Beta release. According to their findings on Galaxy S9+ running on Beta 4, the battery level dropped to 5 percent from 10 percent only in a few seconds.
Most likely this was a battery recalibrating issue which is quite normal. Most users running on Pie beta reported that their battery drain decreases and only a handful users told that the drain increased. Users can solve the problem simply by doing factory reset, according to tech experts. As the stable update is coming in about two weeks, more details will be revealed in coming days.

Update on 17/1/2019 :

galaxy-note-8-one-ui-betaSamsung begins taking One UI Beta registrations for Note 8 and the rollout also starts for some users. The size of the Beta is 1.8 GB and the version number is N950FXXU5ZSA5. The beta build of Pie also includes January security patch and other goodies.

However, as this is only a preliminary release of Pie, we recommend users to do a full backup and charge battery fully before downloading the update. Interested users can register for One UI Beta through Samsung Members app. The South Korean tech giant may rollout another two or more previews in coming days to improve stability and find out any bugs. Galaxy Note 8 users who have download the One UI beta can share their thoughts in the comment section below.

We will update this post soon with more details about the Android Pie update for Galaxy S9 and Note 8.

When will Android Pie hit Moto Z2 Force and Z2 Play ?

Android pie moto z2 play

On August 15th, 2018, Motorola has confirmed officially that Moto Z2 Force and Z2 Play devices will be updated to Android 9 Pie but the company hasn’t announced any rollout plans for Moto Z2 series, but we expect that the Lenovo owned company may begin the rollout of Android Pie for its flagship devices in Q1 of 2019. Recently, the company begins Pie rollout with mid-range G6 Plus and X4 devices.

Previously Motorola took nearly 9 months to rollout Android Oreo for the unlocked Moto Z devices. But this time we hope Motorola care about faster updates. Since, Moto Z2 series received the Oreo update without Treble support, the rollout of Pie update also may get delayed.

What’s New in Android Pie ?

Android 9 Pie is one of the major updates in Android history and it is specifically optimized for AI. By using machine learning, Android Pie predicts which apps user going to use in coming hours and which are not used frequently, then make optimizations to reduce CPU wake-up cycles upto 30% which converts into massive reduction in battery drain.

Android pie adaptive battery

Adaptive brightness is another feature using the machine learning to set brightness automatically, according to user’s needs and reduce battery drain. One of the major improvements in Pie is new Navigations system using Gestures. The navbar shows only a pill shaped Home button, swiping up on the button user can view Recent Apps and scroll horizontally to switch between apps. To switch quickly between apps, users can swipe right or left on the home button. The newly designed chevron shaped Back button appears only when it’s needed.

Android pie user interface

The User interface also redesigned in Android Pie, some users may think the interface is similar to iOS but it is beautiful, indeed. The Autorotate in Quick Settings has been changed and Messaging Notifications also improved. In notifications, images in message are previewed and also smart replies appear.

Android pie digital wellbeing

The Digital Wellbeing is a future for reducing unnecessary smart phone use and eye strain. The Dashboard shows how many times we unlock the phone and how much time we spent on each app. Wind Down is a feature in Digital Wellbeing to change the screen to grayscale mode in night times to reduce Eye strain. Using app timer, users can limit the time spent on a specific app.

Android Pie Smart Replies

android pie smart replies moto z2

Google rolled out the Smart Reply feature in last year for Android Messaging only inside the Messages app. With Android Pie, famous messaging apps like Whatsapp, Allo and other can use the Smart reply Messaging style APIs and improve user experience. In stock Pie OS on Pixel devices, messaging notification show associated smart replies below the message, so that user can send quick reply with single tap only. Using the new Messaging APIs, app developers are able to display previews in notifications of pictures in messages and many more refinements to improve user experience.

Gesture-based Interface

Android pie navigation

This is one of the remarkable features of the Android Pie update. From Lollipop onwards, the Android Navigation bar hasn’t changed much except some minor refinements. Now with Android Pie, Google totally revamped the navigation bar and removed the app previews button. The style of Home button changed to Pill shaped and the Back button changed to Chevron shape.

So Moto Z2 users have to use gestures in order to navigate between apps and view app previews. Swiping up, right and left on the Home button to multi task between apps. However, users can revert to old interface with the option in Developer Options in the Settings Menu.

Screenshot Button

Android pie screenshot button

In Android Pie, Google brings a screenshot button, so that users can take screenshot without hassle. The old method of Power Button + Volume Down Button also works in Android Pie. The Power menu in Pie shows a screenshot button, tapping on which takes a screenshot. Users can even edit the screenshot right away after it has taken, using the markup editor.

Screenshot Markup Editor

Android 9 Pie came up with a native screenshot editor to edit screenshots and so there is no need to install third-party editor apps. The Markup editor can be launched by tapping on the Edit button after taking a screenshot and then select Markup editor. In the Markup editor interface, there are options called Pen, Highlighter, Undo and Redo which are very much useful. In Seven colors users add details are highlight objects in the screenshots. Users can also crop the screenshots in Markup editor. The Android P DP1 brought Markup editor with basic features but they get enhanced in later previews and the final release.

Shush Feature

android pie shush moto z2

An improvement to Do Not Disturb feature comes in the form of Shush with the Android Pie update. When the user, puts the phone face down on the table the Shush feature automatically activates DND, so there will be no pings, vibrations or notifications. Only starred contacts can get through it in case of any emergency. The feature addressed to reduce unnecessary notification beeps, calls and other, so to decrease smartphone addiction and promote healthy usage. More refinements to the Shush feature may come in upcoming Android 9.1 or Android Q updates.

App Actions

android pie app actions Moto z2 force

The Android 9 Pie update brings the App Actions feature which refine user experience a lot. Smart suggestions called actions specific to the app appears when we launched the app which helps to navigate to the required section easily.

For example, when the user plug-ins Headphone to the jack of the device, Android will display selective suggestions in a dialog box, according to previous behaviour of the user. The feature utilize on-device machine learning capabilities of the Pie OS and display actions quickly. Such type of actions appear in various places while navigating through Android like Maps, Google Playstore, Google Assistant, Smart text selection etc. The may get refined further in upcoming updates.

Overall, Android 9 Pie is a AI powered OS with many improvements over Oreo and promotes healthy smart phone usage.

Dark Theme and Automatic Theme

One of the remarkable features of Android Pie is dark theme which apply at least for Quick Settings and App Launcher. User can apply Dark theme manually by going to Settings > Display > Device Theme and select Dark Theme. When user selects Automatic option, the theme will change according to the set wallpaper. When user sets dark color wallpaper, theme change to dark and vice versa. Using Dark theme, makes easy for eyes and reduce the power consumption by Display.

Android-pie-dark-theme-moto-z2

However, the dark theme is not system-wide and restricted to Quick Settings, App launcher and navigation bar mostly. In the upcoming Android Q, Google is implementing full system-wide Dark theme, according to latest reports.

New Accessibility Menu

In Android Pie, Google introduced new Accessibility menu to replace Gestures for doing Nine actions. The menu usable not only for motor-impaired users but also for normal users. To enable the new Accessibility menu, Moto Z2 users head over to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Menu, then turn the toggle on. Then a small human shaped icon will appear in the navigation bar. So users can launch the accessibility menu by tapping on the human icon on any screen whether they are using gesture navigation or not.

New Accessibility menu composed with nine beautifully designed icons, which give access for Google Assistant, Accessibility Settings, Power Menu, Volume sliders, Recent Apps, Lockscreen, Quick Settings toggles, Notifications and Screenshot. The menu might be developed further in upcoming updates.

Media Volume slider

In Android Pie, the search giant revamped the media controls, so now users can easily change media and call volumes. The media volume slider appears as vertical at side of the screen in Pie, when the user taps volume up or down physical buttons of the device. By sliding on the slider users can easily change volume with single hand even on the massive display of Moto Z2 Force.

By tapping on the icon below the slider, users can set the device into mute and through the double arrow on the slider, user can switch between media and call volumes. The call alert can be switched between sound, vibrate and mute by tapping on the calls icon which appears as a separate box below the media volume slider.

Update on 19/3/2019 :

The Q1 of 2019 is about to end and still no sight of Pie for Moto Z2 series devices. In the last month, Motorola rolledout the Pie update along with security patch for Moto Z3 Play and G6 series. However, the tech giant begins rolling out security patch only for Z2 Force in some regions. So we expect the rollout will begin in April, 2019 for Z2 series devices.

On March 13th, the Search Giant unveiled the first Beta of Android Q with many exciting features like revamped permissions, desktop mode and other. Reports from reliable sources indicate that more tech giants will rollout the Beta for their devices, this time. So Motorola might become a partner in the Beta program soon and rollout the Beta for its flagships soon. However, at the moment, it seems that the Pie update is the last major update for Z2 series. But the rollout plans may change in coming days.

We will update this article soon with more details about Android Pie update for Moto Z2 Force and Play.
