The G7 ThinQ flagship from LG arrived in May 2018 with many AI associated improvements and upgraded chipset. The successor of G7 is already in development under the name of LG G8 ThinQ, according to some leaks. The 2019 G-series flagship is expected to sport some radical changes in design and Camera sensors.
The official release date of G8 hasn’t revealed yet, as we are probably months away from the announcement of the next G series flagship. However, our best guess is that the South Korean tech giant may launch the upcoming flagship at MWC 2019 which is going to take place in the last week of February. Perhaps, the flagship hit the shelves in March or April 2019.
The South Korean tech giant trying to use AI capabilities in its flagships to provide fluid like user experience and DSLR like Camera shots. Previously, the company unveiled V30S ThinQ, V35 and G7 ThinQ flagships with integrated AI.
The LG G8 ThinQ flagship is going to be powered by Snapdragon 855 chipset, sport 6GB Ram and run on Android 9 Pie out of the box, according to the leaks.
The predecessor of LG G8 arrived with 6.1 inch notched IPS LCD Display with QHD+ resolution in 19.5:9 aspect ratio. LG may remove the notch in the next flagship and improve design and display size. Most likely the flagship will feature 6.3 inch LCD Display which is HDR10 and Dolby vision compliant. The flagship may also feature in-screen fingerprint scanner. Some rumours pointing towards OLED display with 4K resolution in G8 which is really awesome, but nothing has confirmed. Recently Sony has shifted to OLED tech with its Xperia XZ3 flagship, so the same scenario may happen with LG too in coming days.
Simple logic suggests that the flagship phones of 2019 will be powered by Snapdragon 855 chipset, as Qualcomm nearly completed the development and is going to mass production in early-2019. The chipmaker already sent sample to their customer companies to test them in their flagships. So, most likely the G8 ThinQ flagship will be powered by SD855 chipset.
The SD855 chipset is built on 7nm FinFET process, according to Qualcomm. So the power effeciency of the chipset is much more than its predecessor and also more powerful. The chipset may contain eight custom Kryo cores clocked at 3.0 Ghz. The chipset also contains X24 modem which supports lightening fast LTE speeds. The X24 modem supports Cat. 20 download speeds upto 2Gbps and upload speeds upto 316 Mbps.
The base model of LG G8 flagship may boast 6GB Ram and the G8+ variant may boast 256GB storage and 8GB Ram.
Previously, LG used the same Camera module of V30S ThinQ for G7 ThinQ which comprises of Dual 16MP sensors on the rear with f/1.9, f/1.6 apertures and 1micrometre pixel size. The front one sports 8MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture. One of the rear Camera sensors feature Optical Image Stabilization and laser Autofocus. The other one helps to take wide angle pictures but doesn’t feature OIS.
Using AI-powered Image optimization, LG has very much in Camera section with G7 thinQ compared to its predecessor. In the G8 ThinQ also, we may see the similar camera setup to that of G7 but minor refinements always will be there. Because of dedicated NPU chip in Snapdragon 855, the Camera image processing speed will be increased drastically and users can also take HDR optimized pictures much faster. In coming days, more details about G8 ThinQ Camera will be revealed.
The predecessor of LG G8 ThinQ came with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and LG is preparing to rollout the Android 9 Pie update soon. But, the G8 flagship will come with pre-installed Android Pie with many awesome new features.
Android 9 Pie is mainly an AI powered OS to provide great user experience. Using the Adaptive battery feature, Pie OS reduce battery drain upto 30 percent and Adaptive brightness feature changes brightness of screen automatically, according to user’s need. The features like Gesture based interface with horizontal app switcher, new Media volume controls and Screenshot editor enhance user experience a lot.
The G7 flagship is powered by Non-removable 3000mAh Li-Po battery with Quick Charging 3 support. So the next flagship may come with incremental battery upgrade and Quick Charge 4+ support. More details about the Battery of LG G8 will be revealed in coming days.
